The Elpis Hellenic Community of Constanța

The “Elpis” association was founded on 24 September 1890 by young Greeks in Constanța who lacked a club with a reading room. The Hellenic Community it represents has far older roots, though: the Hellenic presence in Dobrogea has been unbroken since pre-Christian times.

The site tells that history in order — the Genoese period and the trading links with the Greeks of Pontus, the Greek merchants of 1821, the community’s coming into its own between 1858 and 1860, the part Greek workers played in the Cernavodă bridge and in the great works of the Port of Constanța — because for a cultural community, history is not decoration; it is the content itself.

Above the history sits the community’s day-to-day life: the statute and the leadership, the youth organisation, the dance ensemble and the Elpis football club, the Greek language courses, the festivals and notable figures, a YouTube channel and Greek radio stations that play straight from the site.
