Mare Nostrum was formed in the summer of 1993 on the initiative of young specialists from various fields connected with marine research and environmental protection, who recognised that science alone cannot resolve the serious ecological imbalances that had emerged in the Black Sea region. By 2002, Mare Nostrum had more than 65 registered members and over 120 volunteers and supporters. Mare Nostrum is an organisation open to every citizen concerned about the degradation of the environment along the Romanian coast. Its mission is to bring about a change in the current practices and attitudes of local communities, decision-makers and other interest groups, towards ones that ensure the conservation and rational use of the natural resources of the Romanian coastal zone.
